I saw a big blue moose with my own eyes yesterday. He was in the clearing behind my house and he was as blue as blue could be. I watched him from my bedroom window as he moved slowly through the brush.
“That’s odd.” I said, “Mooses aren’t blue.”
I'm going to ask the big blue moose why he's blue. “Don’t leave Mr. Moose! I’m coming Mr. Moose!”
Down the stairs I ran like a rocket. I blasted out of the back door to the clearing surrounded by small bushes and brambles.
Mr. Moose continued slowly lumbering through the bushes. He stopped now and then to munch on something.
“Hey, wait for me.” I tried not to scare him away.
He was so busy munching that he didn't see me. He didn't hear me. I was upwind from him so he didn't smell me, but I could smell him! He smelled sweet and familiar. What was that smell? Why was he so blue?
His large head turned slowly toward me and he stared. I stared back. I wondered if he could tell how scared I was. I was close enough to see that even the whites of his eyes were blue.
I couldn't control myself. I just blurted out. “Mr. Moose, why are you so blue?”
Then the strangest thing happened. Mr. Moose began to speak. You heard me right, He started speaking to me and...and...and....rhyming.
“I am not blue because I’m sad, I am not blue because I’m bad.
I am not blue because I’m cold, I am not blue because I’m old.
You see I am the color blue! The reason is simple and I will tell YOU!
I love to eat blueberries, plump and sweet, instead of cereal or burger meat.
I eat berries all day long, they're good for me and keep me strong.
Most of all I love whipped cream, mixed with my blueberries it is a scream.
I eat blueberries as I dream, I am a blueberry eating machine!
I am blue because of my diet. In a zoo, I would cause a riot!
It has been said, you are what you eat. I eat the most delicious treat.
I'll be on my way, please turn me loose. I am blue because I’m Blueberry Moose.”
Mr. Moose turned and slowly munched his way through the wild blueberry patch lumbering over the next hill and out of sight. I stood there in disbelief. I rubbed my eyes. I scratched my head.
"Did I just see what I saw? Did I just hear what I heard? When I tell this tale will I be called a nerd? Did I just hear a big blue moose tell me the story of why he is blue? I sure believe it........Do you?"
What does a moose really eat?
Moose are herbivores, they eat a vegetarian diet. The things moose eat are called moose “browse,” originating from their browsing on twigs and berry plants. They munch on berries, plants and flowers in the summer; choosing plants with many nutrients and with low fiber. Moose may eat as much as fifty to sixty pounds a day. In the winter, they eat branches and limbs off of dead trees. When they eat blueberries they will eat the whole plant berries and all. They will eat your whole garden if given a chance!
